Saving for a mortgage is not easy, but making small compromises can make the world of difference (and get you into a home of your own that little bit quicker). We run through an average working day and point out some ways you could cut back costs that you may not have thought of.
Close enough to walk or bike to work? Close enough to a colleague to car share? Consider your commuting options to reduce your petrol/public transport spend (and your carbon emissions).
We have a well-known coffee chain just around the corner from Teachers Building Society HQ, and we know how tempting it can be to treat yourself to a cup of coffee. But cut out your twice a week vanilla lattes and you could save up to £300 a year. If you can't bring yourself to give up entirely, at least be sure to treat yourself to a reusable coffee mug. Many chains offer you discounts if you bring your own cup, and you’d also be doing your bit for the environment by cutting down on your single use plastic consumption.
Penchant for a meal deal? You may think you’re getting a good deal but if you treat yourself every day for a year, you could be spending around £900. Making your own lunches can be a much more cost effective option, and healthier too!
The beloved takeaway. According to the Office for National Statistics, households under 30 years old spend the most on takeaway meals eaten at home, spending on average £7.80 a week - or approximately £400 a year. Cutting out takeaways could really boost your new home savings.
Day trips don’t have to be pricey. There are so many resources online to find free and enjoyable days out across the country such as the Visit England site. Harry Potter walking tours, cheese trails, castles and art galleries are just some of the options available to all free of charge – we’re confident you’ll find something that tickles your fancy and saves you some extra pennies.
Try a staycation. We’re very lucky to be based just down the road from a beach, but if you’re not, the furthest you’ll have to travel in the UK to hit the coast is 70 miles. Consider enjoying one of our beautiful beaches this Summer in lieu of more exotic destinations and save up a little extra towards your dream home.
