Teachers Building Society
has received Cyber Essentials Certification which means we have tough security controls in place to protect your data against cyber-attacks.

With stories of cyber-attacks constantly hitting the news, this accreditation shows our commitment to ensuring the security of our members’ data.

What is Cyber Essential Certification?
Cyber Essentials is a UK government scheme operated by the National Cyber Security Centre that tests systems against internet attacks.

How did we receive the certification?
The scheme focuses on Internet attacks and our IT Infrastructure was tested on a number of key security elements. The accreditation shows that we keep your data safe in a number of ways including having secure networks and systems to protect against a range of attacks and threats.

Simon Beresford, CEO at Teachers Building Society, said: “We are proud to have received this accreditation. Providing excellent customer service is something that runs through the heart of the Society but for us customer service isn’t just about delivering quality services, but about ensuring our systems are secure too. We are committed to keeping out member’s data as safe as possible.”

How we keep your data safe when you call us
As a Society we also take measures to ensure the security of your data when you call us. Ensuring your personal data always remains secure – online and over the phone.

  • We will only discuss your account details or action withdrawals from your account once you have passed our rigid security checks
  • We monitor our accounts for abnormal transactional activity and if we have any suspicion of unusual behaviour we will contact you

What you can do to help keep your data safe.

There are lots of things you can do to keep your data safe on your home devices. We take a look:

Install Anti-Virus Software
On top of a firewall, make sure you run up-to-date antivirus software on your computer or device to keep it free from malware and other infections. This software works in the background, blocking not only viruses, but all sorts of malware. You can get security suites which include Firewalls, antivirus and anti-spyware features as well as additional options such as anti-spam and parental controls.

Choose Strong Passwords
You need a password for everything these days - from ordering toys online to logging into your internet banking - and you need to ensure these are as strong as possible.

You should select a password that cannot be easily guessed. Strong passwords are recommended to have at least eight characters or more and use a combination of letters, numbers and symbols (e.g., # $ % ! ?). Avoid using anything based on your personal information such as the name of your dog, or a well-known nickname.

Keep your PC or Mac protected
One of the best ways to make sure your computer is as protected as possible is to ensure that you apply any patches, software fixes and software updates when they become available. By updating your computer on a regular basis, you block attackers from being able to take advantage of any software flaws (vulnerabilities) which they could use to break into your system.

Set up your computer security
You can set your Internet applications, such as your web browser and email software, to be more secure.  For example, settings in your web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox) will determine what happens when you visit websites on the Internet—the strongest security settings will give you greater control but can be frustrating if you are restricted from visiting certain sites or when you get security warnings flash up regularly.

Often security and privacy settings can be set up on your computer easily by using the ‘Help’ feature of your software or visiting the vendor's website.

Finally - Look out for scams
There are lots of scams out there phishing for your personal information. We have written more articles on how to stay safe online and spot suspected scams:
