Bournemouth School for Girls
(BSG) invited staff from Teachers Building Society to provide finance
education to Year 7 pupils this month.
The Wimborne-based mutual visited the school six
times to deliver an interactive session to each Year 7 class, covering
subjects such as how to buy a house, the benefits of saving and the
causes of the credit crunch.
Organised by Lia Mawer, Head of Business Education,
co-ordinated by Sandra Kapoor, Head of House, and Dorset Business, the
Chamber of Commerce, the sessions were designed to help the school
fulfil the provision of financial capability education, now part of the
secondary curriculum.
Mrs Kapoor says, “Our girls thoroughly enjoyed the
session given by the visiting speakers. Many said that they learnt a lot
and have since taken a bigger interest in the topic. We look forward
to working with Teachers Building Society again in the near future”.
Alan Gravett, Head of Sales & Marketing at
Teachers Building Society, delivered the first two sessions at the
school. He says, “As a mutual organisation founded by teachers, we have a
firm commitment to support both the local area and the education sector
where we can. We were delighted to help BSG in this way and were very
impressed by the knowledge and enthusiasm of the pupils.
“In this age of austerity, it’s more important than
ever that young people understand about managing money, why it’s good
to save up for the things you want and the risks associated with
borrowing.”
