Teachers Building Society is co-sponsoring a mural in Wimborne, which has been created to improve the high street while renovations to three commercial buildings are carried out, following a devastating fire in the summer.
Dorset artist Terry Whitworth was commissioned to design the 27 metre-long mural, which depicts Wimborne’s rich heritage, calendar of events and colourful people. Teachers Building Society has been based in Wimborne since 1976 when Allenview House, home to the Society's head office, first opened its doors.
James Bawa, chief executive at Teachers Building Society, attended the mural's launch this week. "It's wonderful to see Wimborne councillors and businesses, along with the local Chamber of Trade, all pull together to improve the high street for the benefit of everyone," he said. "The whole team at Teachers Building Society was saddened by the news of the fire earlier this year, so we're delighted to support this community initiative."
The 17th century buildings, which were severely damaged by the seven-hour blaze, were home to the local newsagents, post office, travel agents and one of the town's popular pubs. It is expected that rebuilding work will take until at least May 2010. In the meantime, the mural will brighten up the high street and provide a perfect cover for the renovation site's grey hoarding.
